Christmas to remember!
Four things that stand out about 2008 Christmas.
1) Austin exceeding his last year talent by sliding 6, yes 6 quarters into one nostril for his portion of the talent show at Grandma Geneals.
2) The little grandkids opening their presents with such an air of newness and surprise.
3) Justin's present of a "real girl", Vicki. Multitalented and so accessible.

4) The excitement of the girls for their present from Mike and Me. Meagan was so overwhelmed she cried, laughed at herself for crying and then cried again. Hopefully when the present arrives she won't be disappointed.

Is this pathetic or what?
Yesterday was crazy and I felt like I didn't get anything done. I messed up at work, I traveled from one end of the city to the other on stupid errands and was just plain exhausted. I got home late, around dinnertime and told Kaitlyn to order Cafe Rio. When she returned home with the order it was wrong! I just started to cry a little because I was so frustrated.(Addendum: Aubs saved the day, (by way of Austin's request), and brought me a different Cafe Rio order, that was right! What a great girl!) Anyway I determined that in the morning I would get things accomplished. I got up fairly early and started to work. I felt really good about it when all of a sudden Good Things Utah said something that spurred a memory. I was an hour late for a business appointment! It was totally snowy, so I quickly determined to take Lil' Blue and her four wheel drive. I threw on some clothes, a little makeup and dashed down the stairs to look for my coat and gloves. Found my coat, but no gloves. In a panic I ran to the island to look for spare gloves. The only thing available was an orphan dirty leather glove and my blue oven mitt. Well in a pinch I can tell you it works! Even with mismatched gloves, this day was better than yesterday!

Grandma and Grandpa Burton

As a very small pre-elementary school kid Grandpa Burton would tend me, while my mom ran errands. First thing in the morning, Grandma Burton would fry up an egg, never breaking the yoke, and cooking it in about 1/2 cup of bacon grease. The edges would fry up to a very brown crispy edge. Grandpa would have his toast dipped into the yoke with I think it was coffee to swig it down. He would always have lip slime on the side of his mouth that he rarely wiped off. I could never figure that out, but even as a small child I thought that was rather funny. After breakfast, we would mess around outside, sometimes he would be working on an old car and I would just hang around and watch. After outside duties it would be lunchtime. It seemed that Grandma Burton was gone somewhere about this time and lunch would be up to Grandpa to fix. Always, always he would fix me a peanut butter and slathered honey sandwich, and a side bar of Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup. It was the best, because he would let me pick out my favorite handled spoon. My favorite was a Mickey Mouse silver spoon, and it seemed to be his favorite too! I don't know why that always made me feel so big, but it did. It was one of my favorite things to do. Sometimes later in the after noon when Grandma was home we would have a snack. Grandpa would eat peanut butter from a spoon while Grandma wasn't looking. That would always make me laugh to get one over on Grandma. If she caught Grandpa she would always scold him with "Howwwward", in an amused, very low, slow voice. Even as she voiced her displeasure, she had a half crooked smile on her face. They were funny.
Grandma used to tend us when Mom and Dad went hunting. There was an old iron bed in the spare bedroom that we slept in. As the night got older we got a little sillier and would start our circus act on the bed. We would run and flip, tumble and do acrobatic tricks until we became so loud, that Grandma would catch us and give us heck. We would promise to behave and quietly work up another circus act as if we had just lived through the intermission. She would even threaten to spank us if we didn't "settle down". EWWWW!
I remember Grandpa letting us, meaning Kathryn, Penny and I, rollerskate in the Zellerbach warehouse as we played "Hide and Seek". I must have been about 7 or 8. We would hide behind the tall shelves of paper as our "it" person hunted for us, all while Grandpa proceeded to do his janitorial work in the other office. I remember one Saturday hiding in a new place right by the warehouse office. Quietly I rolled around, positioning myself into a great spot, and just as I was settling down I looked up at the wall above my head and noticed a nudey calendar. My mouth dropped and I couldn't believe my eyes. "What in the heck was that doing here?" "What kind of a place is this?" We never told Grandpa, because it was too crazy, but oooohh what a day that was. Yuck!
I remember Grandma Burton's classic 50's high heel shoes, black, with fat heels. She would dress up, makeup and all and put those crisscrossed toed shoes on to go to work at the Paris. They were the coolest!
I remember the day I discovered that wives sometimes do quiet, underhanded things to keep their husbands from complaining. My mother, me, and Penny watched Grandma Burton cut the tag out of a new t-shirt that Grandpa Burton would wear. When I asked why we were doing that, Grandma replied that Grandpa wouldn't wear a shirt made out of certain fabric, so she cut the tag out and told him it was a different fabric she had bought on sale. What in the world? I had never conceived of this type of deception, but it has come in handy as I have gotten older and quite a bit more in need of calm.
Grandma Burton would take us every year to the Paris Christmas Party. The tradition was to watch "The Wizard of Oz", of which I have become quite attached, at Grandma's and then go to the party. After the fun of the party we picked out a wrapped present and took it home. They always had the best gifts and it was so fun to anticipate what was in the present every year.
The summer when I turned 16 we drove to Alaska. At one point we had to load the truck onto the ferry and travel up river. Grandpa and Grandma Burton were on the ferry with us and we started playing "Old Maid", the card game. After playing several hands Grandpa ended up with the "Old Maid". It was then that he realized that wasn't what you wanted to end up with. He started laughing, until he cried, all the while his glasses sliding down his little nose. I remember his teeth dislodging from the "polident" tight grip, which never seemed tight to me, and jiggling out of his mouth, back in, and then back out again. It was a site to behold. He was soooo much fun!
I miss both of them so much and all the weird fun we had. They made my childhood very memorable. It's great to have a loving, fun family. One that can throw an orange straight as an arrow on a dare and blacken the eye of another beloved. I guess that's what makes families unique and certainly memorable!

I have a question that has plagued me for quite some time. Maybe ya'all can help me. Is there anyone out there that has the same age as their birthyear? For instance I am 54, I know that seems way to old for the way I act, but I was born in 1954. Get it? In my thinking, there can only be kids born in 2000 that qualify for this statement, unless you were born after 1910 and you are still alive. You have to be alive to play this game. This 1910 guy would qualify for the game when he was 10. Post and tell me if this works for you, or actually when it will work for you. Statistically it won't happen to all of us, especially if we die young, right???? Does this even make sense to anyone but me?

We went to Lake Powell this summer. This fine "man" represents the Davies "man status". Look at those fine pectoral lines, bulging biceps, toned abs. But of all these the mental muscle stands tallest!
Luke is King!

You know, Mike is really on the "cutting edge" of style,........ but later on this bit. I went to a neighbors wedding, that Mike was conducting, and got lost, ( which is beginning to be a routine act for me.) I finally located the very small church and decided to enter at the door on the side of the building, because it was open. As I approached the door I noticed the bride standing right there, I shrunk down a little so I wouldn't be too noticed, but was, and quickly remarked "I sorry I'm late". She abruptly responded, kind of annoyingly that I needed to walk down the side aisle of the small chapel to find a seat. As I snuck in the back, everyone turned around, because at the same instance the music began and the bride practically followed me in. I'm sure the crowd was pleased that "I" wasn't the bride to be, but a little bewildered at my timely entrance. Anyway back to the story of Mike on the cutting edge. He performed the wedding very nicely and then announced to the congregation the introduction of what was suppose to be "Preston" and "Christine", but came out "Prestine". Thank goodness everyone laughed.
Really when you think about it, was he the one who coined "Benafer", and "Branjolina?" Who really knows, but as for me, I think it stands to reason that he is the man who coins the phrases we all wish we'd said!

9 things.....one better

9 TV shows I like to watch...ER, Office, HGTV, Ell-N, House, The Hills, Rob and Big, Dancing with the Stars, and The Bachelorette.

9 Favorite Restaurants....Chili's, Chuck o Rama, Cafe Rio, Kneaders, Mimi's, Cheesefactory, Big B's (when there was one), Outback, and The Olive Garden, even though I couldn't remember the name! (five of those, Mike hates!)

9 things that happened yesterday..... We stole syrup from the hotel restaurant so we could feed the family. We watched Paul bounce big boy baby (triple "B"), Mac off an air-filled mattress, giggling all the way to the next mattress. Watched Mike redo the bench he had just put together, because he put it together backwards. Drove three and 1/2 hours in a 1987 rusted out truck named Lil' Blue with Lil' Wil shedding like dandruff flying off the unwashed haed of a hobo. Listened to conference every so often when we were between mountains, (You might say the radio in Lil Blue isn't cherry. ) Went to Megan Todd's B-day party and talked about Halloween costumes with the old people. Stood in awe at the party later when Jason brought his date ( a real girl), to the festivities. After awe came dumbfounded when Nick traveled the distance and came to the "big" gathering. Ended the night by squeezing "the zit" on Willies mug to see if a thick whisker would pop out!

9 things I look forward to....going on a mission, vacationing in France for my 35th anniversary, getting a new granite countertop, wearing my pj bottoms all day, taking a long, hot, bath, going to lunch with the girls, finishing or rather starting my bedroom remodel, having my yard manicured, and last of all sawing the quakie trees, bores and all to the ground!

9 wish list items.....seeing all my grandkids in one room, marrying off all my children before the grandkids, a clean house for three straight days, having a new exciting, creative costume every year for Halloween until the day I die, wearing matching socks every day, having a full time hair dresser, a clone of myself that talks about how great her boss is, being a co-host for a year, and being able to dance like Ell-N every day!

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

I had the flu yesterday! I lost a lot of weight, so I figure if I have the flu for ten more days, I will be down to a size 2. Does that size actually exist? In all reality I think my meaty hips say "wow, you have a few used years on your bones, that signify something pretty special." I'm proud to be the mother of eight wonderful children. Of course, wrinkles are another thing......unless your name is "Char Pay".
I found this old draft from June, odd thing is I had food poisoning the other night and lost a little weight, liquid type, in the middle of the night. It all came about from eating a steak at Sizzler that tasted like bologny. Why I ate it tasting like bolognie I'll never know. You know the one big thing that buggs me is that I can't remember, and that means I can't remember how to spell. Or did anyone notice?

"Back the boat up!"

I love the term "missed the boat", thus "hold the boat", or "back the boat up" is my relevant terminology. I've had a running look over the years, at all the things that some of my peeps miss......actually I just wait and watch what will happen with certain things. For instance, I refuse to pick up the delivered newspaper and some days I just check off the days on the calendar it lays there on the driveway. May sound strange, but here are a few others. Maybe you can relate. *Checking the toothbrush to see if anyone has used it this week, or should I say this month. *measuring the mold growing up the glass which finds itself always on top of the TV in the bedroom. *Who really put the gas mask on the kitchen table, and for what reason. *Is there a reason why the phone is never on the phone base? You would think so when the peeps ask why it doesn't work, when we all know it has to be "charged" for that to happen. * Did you know that people don't show up for events if you don't call them, or organize the event beforehand. *What kind of sci-fi movie creature removes the milk lids and piles them up in the corner of the fridge. *Why do mothers only clean up fresh vomit when it happens? *For that fact, why are mothers the only people who clean up booggers on the walls, or a sick dogs mess, or spilled milk, or spilled liquid for that matter. How bout dog poop on the lawn. Speaking of the lawn, just replacing the water meter lid is part of boat missing. What is to become of the society of D-peeps who can't handle any of these? Only time will tell, but as for me, I think I've actually become one of "them".

For the last eight years, my friend Gina and I give a birthday party for my departed son Timmy. We hold it at the cemetery, weather permitting. That may seem weird, but it is a way of celebrating and acknowledging his birth and his time spent here. We usually have a picnic, wear birthday hats and do silly things. To me, in the now, it is important to develop good memories and activities, to offset the pain and loneliness of missing him . I know he stands close to me often, for I feel of his spirit,or he communicates his presence by a familiar song that seems to play at odd times. I feel good sometimes knowing I have moved through some of the horrific pains of his death and rectified enough to move along. But I miss him, and feel glad for that, because I always want to miss him, because I love him so much. At present I can always bring myself back to the fact that he is doing so well on the other side and I'm sure he feels some sense of contentment knowing we can move forward with our lives. Happy 27th Birthday Timmy!
(Do you think people refer to him as "Timmy" still?)
.
